Whether to move or consider moving is a difficult personal decision.
Some would say that weighing up your options for IT jobs and widening your horizons has never been more pertinent given the global nature of the IT profession. Others would say that it is better to consolidate and stay a little longer.
As recruitment consultants, you can appreciate that we come across a huge volume of CVs. Each person's situation requires some thought, but some general advice/observations might be as folllows:
- Be clear why you want to move - are you seeking new opportunities or running away from problems?
- Have you learned enough from where you are? Have you added enough value to this employer?
- It makes sense to stay for 2-3 years at each position, to learn and consolidate. As a general rule, employers will question candidates where they have moved jobs every 2-3 years. Clearly, this is very different if you are a freelance contractor.
- However, every so often, it is wise to look around and see what else is out there. Be prepared to acknowledge the strengths of where you are, and that staying may be a good choice.
- Equally, if you decide to move, don't apply for just one job - make a plan and apply for many in your chosen arena, so that you have a sensible choice of job offers in hand.
- Despite all the oft-projected doom and gloom - this is still a buyers market, especially for the right candidate.
- Have you considered moving abroad to broaden your horizons and also gain some perspective of how the rest of the world operates?
If you need a hand in deciding - it might be a good idea talk to trusted colleagues or a mentor. Alternatively, why not give us a call?
